Every Rolex has two prices
The retail price is what a dealer asks when selling the watch, with authentication, a warranty, insured shipping and a return policy attached. The buy price is what a dealer pays when buying it, which must leave room for those costs and for the risk of holding the watch. The gap between the two is not a trick; it is the cost of turning a private watch into a guaranteed one. When you ask "what is my Rolex worth", decide first which of the two numbers you need.
The six factors
1. Reference and configuration
The reference number sets the baseline. Within it, the dial color, bezel, bracelet and metal move the price: a green-dial Submariner, a two-tone GMT-Master II or a diamond-dial Datejust each sit at a different point than the base steel version. Discontinued colorways and nickname references (Hulk, Batman, Pepsi, Root Beer) carry a premium over the current equivalents.
2. Condition
An original, unpolished case with crisp edges is worth more than a heavily polished one. Buyers look at the bezel insert, the dial and lume, the crystal, the bracelet stretch and the clasp. Honest wear is priced in; replaced non-original parts reduce the value more than wear does, especially on vintage references.
3. Box and papers
A full set with the warranty card, box and receipts adds a premium and widens the pool of buyers. A card dated recently and in the seller's name is the strongest single document.
4. Year
Newer production usually means a higher price for current references, because the remaining Rolex warranty and the latest movement count. For discontinued references the year matters less than the condition and the configuration.
5. Service history
A documented service by Rolex or a qualified watchmaker in the last few years supports the price and speeds up the sale. An overdue service is reflected in the offer, not a reason to refuse the watch.
6. Demand
Steel sports models and full sets sell fastest and hold value best. Dealer demand for a reference shifts month to month, which is why quotes from different weeks are not comparable and why a live inventory is a better reference point than an old article.
